I do maintain and develop two WordPress sites - unfortunately in Afrikaans - where you will see some of the great things that WordPress can do. And I must say, with Yootheme coming to the party and porting their great Joomla! templates into WordPress themes, I find WordPress still more awesome than ever.
My one gripe with WordPress before was that widgets could not be set to appear only on specific pages. That has been rectified with the new Yootheme WordPress themes. You can activate/deactivate widgets at will. Perfect!
