The Superblogger plugin from JoomlaWorks is an excellent commenting system (the normal Disqus commenting plugin is also excellent and still free, but with less features). It has an excellent interface in Joomla! enhanced further by the administrative capabilities at the Disqus website, if you decide to use Disqus and not some other commenting system like yvcomment of JomComment. Here are some of the features when combined with Disqus:
  • Moderation of comments with an array of options,
  • Integration with 14 other social media services like Facebook, Flickr and Twitter,
  • Allowing people to comment with their Twitter and OpenID profiles
  • Trackbacks to display links that refer to your posts,
  • Spam protection through Akismet,
  • Reblogging (just remember to activate the xml-rpc publishing protocols for example in your WordPress installation - you find that at http://www.yoursite.com/blog/wp-admin/options-writing.php),
  • Tweaking of the appearance of the comment system (themes, avatars, structure of threads, pagination, positioning of the comment box)
  • Widget for your website with a eye-candy display of the top commenters, recent comments and the most popular comments.
  • Accessing all the comments from every website you administrate in one place - that is a time-saver!

And its features in Joomla!:

  • Rating an article,
  • Reading related articles on the Internet,
  • RSS feeds,
  • Linking the article to your favorite social networks,
  • Using your own Disqus, Facebook or Twitter account to comment on an article,
  • Suscribing to all comments on a specific article with various options,
  • Accessing the author's community page at Disqus,
  • Converting your comment to a tweet on your Twitter account and automatically shortening the comment to 140 characters with a link to the rest of the comment, and
  • Getting links to the author's latest other articles in the database,

The only 3 problems I had with it, are:

  1. Getting the tweetmeme plugin to work, at the same time as the Disqus commenting system.  It works well on its own, but not with the Disqus system.  Activating tweetmeme unfortunately disables the DisQus commenting system on my installation. Haven't worked out how to get that right yet.  It could be something to do with the YOOtheme template I am using.
  2. When utilizing the Read more feature, the links before the Read more do not show up in the full lenght article.  Could also be related to the template.
  3. I  also wanted to combine it on another website with my previous yvcomments, but could not find out how.

But solving that is for another day!  I am still impressed.
